“Antigraft campaign loses again”

On Tuesday, May 14, the South Jakarta Court District ordered the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to drop its corruption case against former Makassar mayor Ilham Arief Sirajuddin. KPK representatives are considering appellate options as well as a move to refile charges after gathering additional evidence.
“National scene: KPK insists on recruiting TNI personnel”

Interim KPK Commissioner Johan Budi reiterated that the proposal to recruit members of the Indonesian military (TNI) as staff at the anti-graft agency would be contingent upon their retirement from the armed forces. Johan also dismissed concerns of a potential conflict of interest, as the KPK is not authorized to investigate the military’s involvement in corruption.
“President suggested to provide amnesty to corrupt police”

The head of the University of Indonesia Alumni Association, Chandra Motik, has suggested President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo consider a four-step plan to root out corruption within the police force. The proposed approach would include a general amnesty for police officers for corruption-related offenses committed before 2010.
“AGO captures corruption fugitive in Merpati case”

A team from the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) arrested Tony Sudjiarto, the former general manager of PT Merpati Nusantara Airlanes’ aircraft procurement division . Sudjiarto had previously been convicted of corruption but had escaped before being transferred to incarceration, and was declared a fugitive by the Attorney General in May 2014 .

KPK prosecutors seek a 6.5 year prison sentence for Sentul City boss Kwee Cahyadi Kumala in the opening session of his trial at the Jakarta Corruption Court (TIPIKOR). The defendant is charged with bribing Bogor mayor to rezone a protected forest area for commercial development.
“Former Secretary-General of ESDM Ministry objects to KPK indictment”

Waryono Karno, former secretary-general at the Mining and Natural Resources Ministry, objected to theKPK prosecutor’s indictment at Jakarta Corruption Court (TIPIKOR). Waryono’s legal team claimed the indictment was unclear, inaccurate and incomplete.
